Island of the Gods
What a feeling it was being in Miyajima, Japan! Noted by many as one of the top 3 views in Japan, the island did not fail to amaze. On the island, you can find Itsukushima Shrine which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. I have a passion to visit as many world heritage sites as possible and I was glad to scratch another one off the list. According to UNESCO's website, I only have 1,000 more to see.
What you see in my photo is the great floating Torii Gate. First built in the 6th century, the gate serves as a entrance to the holy and sacred island. This photo was taken as low tide and blue hour were approaching. At that point, the hordes of tourists start to disappear, the stone lanterns set around the island begin to come on, and the floating gate is illuminated with strong lights from the island. That is when I truly felt something spiritual about being there.
Fun Fact: Even today, pregnant woman are asked to leave the island before birth approaches to maintain the purity of the shrine.
